How to Perform Solat









Step 1: Qiyaam (Standing straight)


One must stand facing the direction of Kaabah (Qiblat), and keep the mind free from all worldly thoughts.


Step 2: Recite the Niat (intent to Solat)

One should recite the niat according to the solat that one intends to perform. The niat for each of the five compulsory solat are as follows:

Niat for Solat Subuh:


أُصَلِّي فَرْضَ الصُبْحِ رَكَعَتَيْنِ أَدَاءً لله تَعَالَى


Meaning: "I hereby perform my Subuh solat in 2 rakaats for the sake of Allah."


Niat for Solat Zohor:


أُصَلِّي فَرْضَ الظُّهْرِ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ أَدَاءً لله تَعَالَ


Meaning: "I hereby perform my Zohor solat in 4 rakaats for the sake of Allah."


Niat for Solat Asar:


أُصَلِّي فَرْضَ العَصْرِ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ أَدَاءً لله تَعَالَى


Meaning: "I hereby perform my Asar solat in 4 rakaats for the sake of Allah."

Niat for Solat Maghrib:


أُصَلِّي فَرْضَ المَغْرِبِ ثَلَاثَ رَكَعَاتٍ أَدَاءً لله تَعَالَى


Meaning: "I hereby perform my Maghrib Solat in 3 rakaats for the sake of Allah."

Niat for Solat Isyak:


أُصَلِّي فَرْضَ العِشَاءِ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ أَدَاءً للهِ تَعَالَى


Meaning: "I hereby perform my Isha' Solat in 4 rakaats for the sake of Allah."


Step 3: Takbiratul Ihram

This is the first takbir which marks the first rakaat, beginning of solat. Upon reciting it, one is forbidden to talk or do anything that has nothing to do with solat. Raise both hands to the shoulders. The tip of the fingers should be parallel to one's ears. The recitation is as below.


اَللهُ أَكْبَرُ

Meaning : Allah is Great.

Then place both hand between the chest and the navel.


Step 4: Recite Doa Iftitah

After the 1st takbir and still in standing position, we are to recite doa iftitah.


Doa Iftitah:

اَلله أَكْبَرُ كَبِيْرًا وَالحَمْدُ لله كَثِيْرًا وَسُبْحَانَ الله بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيْلًا. وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلَّذِي

فَطَرَالسَمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ حَنِيْفًا مُسْلِمًا وَمَا أَنَامِنَ

المُشْرِكِيْنَ. إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي للهِ رَبِّ

الْعَالَمِيْنَ.

لَاشَرِيْكَ لَهُ وَبِذَلِكَ أُمِرْتُ وَأَنَامِنَ الْمُسْلِمِيْنَ.


Meaning : "Allah is the Greatest. Praise and glory be to you O Allah through the day and night. I turn my face to the One who created the skies and the earth. I surrender to ALl

ah and I am not from among the infidels. Verily, I devote my solat, worship, my life and death only for Allah, God of the universe. Truly, I am not from among the infidels. And such is my duty, and I am from among the Muslims."


Step 5: Recite Surah Al-Fatihah


After reciting doa Iftitah, it is wajib(compulsory) in every solat for us to recite surah

Al-Fatihah.


Surah Al-Fatihah


بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ. اَلْحَمْدُ للهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ. اَلرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ. مٰلِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّيْنِ. إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّ

اكَ نَسْتَعِيْنُ. اِهْدِنَاالصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيْمَ. صِرَاطَ الِّذِيْنَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوْبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّآلِّيْنَ.


Meaning : "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Praise be to Allah, The Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds: Most Gracious, Most Merciful; Master of the Day of Judgement. You do we worship, and Your aid we seek. Show us the straight way, the way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, those whose (portion) is not wrath, and who go not astray.

Ameen.

اٰمِيْنَ


Step 6: Recite any Surah from the Holy Quran


It is sunnah to read a surah from the Quran. Example, surah Al-Falaq.


بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

قُلۡ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلۡفَلَقِ (١) مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ (٢) وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ (٣) وَمِن شَرِّ ٱلنَّفَّـٰثَـٰتِ فِى ٱلۡعُقَدِ (٤) وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ (٥)


Meaning: "Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of the day break, and the plain appearing and em e rge nce of truth. From the evil of that which He has created. And from the evil (that usually prevails in the times) of darkness when it overspreads (at night). And from the evil of those who try (and whisper evil suggestions) to deter (people) from doing their duty. And from the evil of the envier when he envies."

Step 7: Takbir before Ruku'

After reciting the surah, recite the takbir and raise both

hands to the shoulders. The tips of the fingers should be parallel to the ear.


اَللهُ أَكْبَرُ


Meaning : Allah is Great.


Step 8: Ruku'


Ruku' is to bow down with hands on the knees. Tuma'ninah* is necessary here. Recite this verse 3 times.


سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيْمِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ


Meaning : Glory to my Lord, the Great,

with all his praiseworthy attributes x3

*Tuma'ninah refers to keeping still in the current position before moving to the next position.

Step 9: I'tidal


I'tidal is to resume the upright posture after the ruku'. As one rises from the ruku' position, he should lift both hands to the shouders and say :


اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ سَمِعَ

Meaning : Allah listens to him who praises Him.

Then let both hands down. Stand still for awhile and say :


رَبَّنَا لَكَ الْحَمْدُ


Meaning : Our lord, praise be for You only.

Step 10: Takbir after Ruku'


Recite the takbir أَكْبَرُ اَللهُ

(Allah is Great) and prostrate down to perform the sujud.

Step 11: Sujud (first)


Sujud is to prostrate down until every part of the body is still. Seven limbs of our body must touch the ground. They are the forehead, two palms, two knees and the toes. Tuma'ninah is also necessary here.

Recite this verse three times.


سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى وَبِحَمْدِه


Meaning : Glory to my Lord, the Most High, with all his praiseworthy attributes.


Step 11: Takbir after Sujud

After the sujud, recite the takbir and move to the sitting position.


أَكْبَرُ اَللهُ


Meaning : Allah is Great.

Step 12: Sitting Between Sujud


At this sitting position, the left bottom should be rested on the left foot which is placed flat on the ground. The right foot is kept upright in such mannr that the tips of the toes are facing the qiblat. The hands should be placed on the thighs. In this positio, recite this verse :


وَعَافِنِيْ وَاعْفُ عَنِّيْ اغْفِرْلِي وَارْحَمْنِيْ وَاجْبُرْنِيْ وَارْفَعْنِيْ وَارْزُقْنِيْ وَاهْدِنِيْ رَبِّ


Meaning : O' my Lord, forgive me, have mercy on me, fulfil my needs, elate my position, give e sustenance, give me guidance, bless me and forgive me.


Step 13: Takbir


Recite the takbir

أَكْبَرُ اَللهُ

(Allah is Great) and prostrate down to perform the sujud (second).


Step 14: Sujud (second)


Recite this verse three times.


سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى وَبِحَمْدِه


Meaning : Glory to my Lord, the Most High, with all his praiseworthy attributes.

Step 15: Takbir

After the second sujud, recite the takbir أَكْبَرُ اَللهُ and rise to the qiyam position to carry on with the second raka'at.


Step 16: Recite Surah Al-Fatihah

Surah Al-Fatihah

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ. اَلْحَمْدُ للهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ. اَلرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ. مٰلِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّيْنِ. إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِيْنُ. اِهْدِنَاالصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيْمَ. صِرَاطَ الِّذِيْنَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوْبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّآلِّيْنَ.

Step 17:
Recite any Surah from the Holy Quran

دُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ (٥) مِنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ (٦)


Meaning: "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,The King of mankind,The True God of mankind,From the evil of the sneaking whisperer,Who whispereth in the hearts of mankind,Of the jinn and of mankind."


Step 18: Takbir before Ruku'

After reciting the surah, recite the takbir and raise both hands to the shoulders. The tips of the fingers should be parallel to the ear.


اَللهُ أَكْبَرُ


Meaning : Allah is Great.


Step 19: Ruku'

Recite this verse 3 times.

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيْمِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ


Meaning : Glory to my Lord, the Great, with all his praiseworthy attributes x3


Step 20:I'tidal


As one rises from the ruku' position, he should lift both hands to the shoulders. At the same time say:


اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ سَمِعَ


Meaning : Allah listens to him who praises Him.

Then let both hands down. Stand still for awhile and say :


الْحَمْدُ رَبَّنَا لَكَ


Meaning : Our lord, praise be for You only.


Step 21:
Takbir after Ruku'

Recite the takbir أَكْبَرُ اَللهُ

(Allah is Great) and prostrate down to perform the sujud.


Step 22: Sujud (first)

Recite this verse three times.


سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى وَبِحَمْدِهِ

Meaning : Glory to my Lord, the Most High, with all his praiseworthy attributes.


Step 23:
Takbir after Sujud

After the sujud, recite the takbir and move to the sitting position.


أَكْبَرُ اَللهُ


Meaning : Allah is Great.



Step 24:
Sitting Between Sujud

In this sitting position, recite this verse :


رَبِّ اغْفِرْلِي وَارْحَمْنِيْ وَاجْبُرْنِيْ وَارْفَعْنِيْ وَارْزُقْنِيْ وَاهْدِنِيْ وَعَافِنِيْ وَاعْفُ عَنِّيْ


Meaning : O' my Lord, forgive me, have mercy on me, fulfil my needs, elate my position, give me sustenance, give me guidance, bless me and forgive me.


Step 25:
Takbir

Recite the takbir أَكْبَرُ اَللهُ

(Allah is Great) and prostrate down to perform the sujud (second).


Step 26: Sujud (second)


Recite this verse three times.


سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى وَبِحَمْدِه


Meaning : Glory to my Lord, the Most High, with all his praiseworthy attributes.


Step 27: Takbir

After the second sujud in the second raka'at, do not rise to stand for the third raka'at. Recite the taakbir اَللهُ أَكْبَرُ and return to the sitting position.

Step 28:
Sitting for Tashahud Awal

The sitting position for Tashahud Awal is similar to that of the sitting position between the two sujuds. Recite the Tashahud Awal :


اَلتَّحِيَّاتُ الْمُبَارَكَاتُ الصَّلَوَاتُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ للهِ. اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ. اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِاللهِ الصَّالِحِيْنَ. أَشْهَدُأَنْ لَاإِلٰهَ إِلَّااللهُ. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًارَسُوْلُ اللهِ. اَللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ.


Meaning : All our oral, physical and monetary ways of worship are only for Allah. Peace, mercy and blessing of Allah be upon you, O' Prophet. May peace be upon us and on the devout slaves of Allah. I testify that there is no God but Allah and i testify that Muhammad is His slave and messenger, O' God send your mercy on Muhammad.

When reciting the Tashahud, place the left hand on the left thigh, and the right hands

on the right thigh. The right index finger is pointed outwards, while the other four fingers are locked with the thumb resting in the middle finger. When the "Kalimah Shahadah" is recited, the index finger should be raised upwards.


Step 29:
Recite Takbir and Rise for third rakaat

After reciting the Tashahud Awal, stand up while saying the takbir. Both hands should be raised to the shoulder.


أَكْبَرُ اَلله


Meaning : Allah is Great

For the third rakaat, the steps are similar to that of the first and second rakaat except that one need not recite a surah after Surah Al-Fatihah.

Step 30: Recite Surah Al-Fatihah

Surah Al-Fatihah

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى وَبِحَمْدِهِ


Meaning : Glory to my Lord, the Most High, with all his praiseworthy attributes.


Step 36: Takbir after Sujud


After the sujud, recite the takbir and move to the sitting position.


أَكْبَرُ اَللهُ


Meaning : Allah is Great.



Step 37:
Sitting Between Sujud


In this sitting position, recite this verse :


رَبِّ اغْفِرْلِي وَارْحَمْنِيْ وَاجْبُرْنِيْ وَارْفَعْنِيْ وَارْزُقْنِيْ وَاهْدِنِيْ وَعَافِنِيْ وَاعْفُ عَنِّيْ


Meaning : O' my Lord, forgive me, have mercy on me, fulfil my needs, elate my position, give me sustenance, give me guidance, bless me and forgive me.


Step 38: Takbir

Recite the takbir أَكْبَرُ اَللهُ

(Allah is Great) and prostrate down to perform the sujud (second).


Step 39: Sujud (second)


Recite this verse three times.


سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى وَبِحَمْدِه


Meaning : Glory to my Lord, the Most High, with all his praiseworthy attributes.


Step 40: Takbir


After the second sujud, recite the takbir أَكْبَرُ اَللهُ and rise to the qiyam position to carry o

n with the forth raka'at which is similar to the third rakaat.


Step 41: Recite Surah Al-Fatihah


Surah Al-Fatihah

الْحَمْدُ رَبَّنَا لَكَ


Meaning : Our lord, praise be for You only.


Step 45: Takbir after Ruku'

Recite the takbir أَكْبَرُ اَللهُ

(Allah is Great) and prostrate down to perform the sujud.


Step 46: Sujud (first)

Recite this verse three times.


سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى وَبِحَمْدِهِ


Meaning : Glory to my Lord, the Most High, with all his praiseworthy attributes.


Step 47: Takbir After Sujud

After the sujud, recite the takbir and move to the sitting position.


أَكْبَرُ اَللهُ


Meaning : Allah is Great.


Step 48: Sitting Between Sujud


In this sitting position, recite this verse :


رَبِّ اغْفِرْلِي وَارْحَمْنِيْ وَاجْبُرْنِيْ وَارْفَعْنِيْ وَارْزُقْنِيْ وَاهْدِنِيْ وَعَافِنِيْ وَاعْفُ عَنِّيْ


Meaning : O' my Lord, forgive me, have mercy on me, fulfil my needs, elate my position, give me sustenance, give me guidance, bless me and forgive me.


Step 49: Takbir

Recite the takbir أَكْبَرُ اَللهُ

(Allah is Great) and prostrate down to perform the sujud (second).


Step 50: Sujud (second)


Recite this verse three times.


سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى وَبِحَمْدِه


Meaning : Glory to my Lord, the Most High, with all his praiseworthy attributes.


Step 51: Takbir After the second sujud in the fourth rakaat, recite the takbirاَللهُ أَكْبَرُ a nd return to the sitting position for Tashahud Akhir.

Step 52:
Tashahud Akhir

The sitting position for Tashahud Akhir is slightly different from that of Tashahud Awal. Instead of resting the left bottom on the left foot, it is rested on the floor. In this position, the Tashahud Akhir is recited. Similar to Tashahud Awal, one must raise the index finger upwards when "Kalimah Shahadah"


أَشْهَدُأَنْ لَاإِلٰهَ إِلَّااللهُ is recited.


اَلتَّحِيَّاتُ الْمُبَارَكَاتُ الصَّلَوَاتُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ للهِ. اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ. اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِاللهِ الصَّالِحِيْنَ. أَشْهَدُأَنْ لَاإِلٰهَ إِلَّااللهُ. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًارَسُوْلُ اللهِ. اَللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ.كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى اِبْرَاهِيْمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ.

وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ. كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى اِبْرَاهِيْمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ . فِي الْعَالَمِيْنَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيْدٌ مَجِيْدٌ.

Step 53: Giving Salam



After reciting the Tashahud Akhir, give salam by turning the head to the right and say :


السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ


Meaning : Peace and mercy of Allah be on you.


Then turn to the left and say : السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ


Meaning : Peace and mercy of Allah be on you.



And that's the end of your Solat!
